Ken Barr -- Ten Years Gone

Ken’s self-portrait from 2007.

Whoa! Another memorial snuck up on me. Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of the death of the mighty Ken Barr. If you want my previous thoughts on a truly excellent artist, check out my posts here and here.

Ken was a proud scion of Scotland. He was born there and he died there. However, in between, he crossed the pond to the USA in search of his fortune. He found success and a wife. Along the way, he created some of the most 'pulpish' post-pulp art of anybody--and that includes Frank Frazetta. Barr's paintings were like Frank McCarthy or Earl Norem on Technicolor steroids: dynamic, over-the-top and blazing with color. I loved his work when I was twelve and I love it now.

Nowadays, some of his best work is already selling comfortably in the five-figure range.

Feel free to check out the Ken Barr gallery below and reach your own conclusion.

Requiescat in pace, Ken.
