Rusty Burke: Good News, Bad News
Rusty Burke, one of the great living REH scholars, suffered a near-fatal fall in December 2023. He recently sent an update to his friend, ‘Indy’ Bill Cavalier. Below is the email verbatim from Indy:
“Here is the word from the old boy himself. While we'll miss him at Howard Days, let's continue with good thoughts and prayers of healing. They certainly are working!
Hello Dear Friends, I have been working hard to be able to attend Howard Days, but have been advised by my physical therapist and others that it would be too soon. My recovery process is still ongoing, and I don't want to risk losing the progress I've already made. Also, sometimes even everyday activities can be tiring, so walking unaided around Cross Plains and attending events, let alone traveling across the country, seems unrealistic. This was not an easy decision, and I will miss seeing everyone. The good news is that I am doing a lot better and look forward to seeing you all next year, if not sooner. Our house in D.C. is open and we would love to have visitors!
I also want to say thank you for all of your ongoing support. Everyone’s positive thoughts and prayers are working! The mountain of cards and letters have helped lift my spirits at this time. Please feel free to pass this message along.
All best,
Rusty”
So, it sounds like Rusty won’t make it to Howard Days 2024, which looked like a possibility at the time of the last update. As I recall, it will be the first time in a long time that Mr. Burke won’t be in attendance. Rusty is a Howard Days institution and he will be missed.
