Regarding Rusty Burke...

Rusty at his workplace in Washington, D.C.

Word reached me late last month, by way of Bill 'Indy' Cavalier, that Rusty Burke had fallen and suffered a severe head injury. I said nothing about it publicly for two reasons. Firstly, I didn't know how private Rusty's wife, Shelly, wanted to keep the situation. Secondly, I was hoping that a miracle might happen and Rusty would improve dramatically, thus negating the need for all those concerned to get truly distressed over it.

Bill has now informed me that Shelly is "glad this info is getting out to the Howard community. Please share with all interested parties."

Consider it done. I will keep information to the most strictly pertinent in order to preserve some privacy for Rusty and his family.

Rusty fell on December 16, suffering two subdural hematomas. Injuries were severe enough that doctors induced a coma for eleven days. When they brought Rusty out of sedation, he entered--and remains in--a barely conscious state. It looks like he may have a long recovery ahead.

Mr. Cavalier had this to say:

"Please continue to offer your healing prayers and thoughts of strength and concern for our dear friend Rusty. He's still with us and will get a little bit better every day with our help."

Rusty has touched the lives of so many people in the REH community, not least myself. Here's hoping for a swift and thorough recovery.
