I’ve always had a guilty fondness for 1980’s Hawk the Slayer. I saw it as a kid and I thought it was kinda cool, despite all the cheesiness. Plus, Jack Palance. In addition, the movie poster—by Drew Struzan?—was solid.

Imagine my surprise when legendary artist, Jim FitzPatrick, revealed on Facebook that the movie’s production company had approached him to do some art. This was awhile back and I didn’t save Jim’s commentary. As I recall, he did two or three different commissions, but only the main piece survived. You can see the full version of the surviving piece—plus two cropped versions at bigger scale—below.

Anyway, I’m glad that something survived and that Jim was kind enough to share it with his fans. A little piece of fantasy/S&S film history, almost lost to the mists of time. I hope y’all get a kick out of the short gallery below.

This one has the cool Celtic interlace/knotwork border that FitzPatrick is famous for.
